Today’s adventure was aboard a boat in Rhode Island while Captain Chris is in Vero Beach, FL. This new boat owner wanted to do a little below deck discovery to answer his many questions. The quickest and most affordable way to help was to Ask Captain Chris via FaceTime. We spent 1 ½ hours touring the engine room of the boat and here are some of the items we covered on our below deck discovery. Check out the photos below to see what some of these items look like.
- Pencil rod zincs in the Diesel.
- Racor diesel fuel filter vacuum gauge with trending needle.
- Dripless shaft seal and maintenance
- Hydraulic steering pressure reservoir
- Potable water pump and pressure regulator.
- Air conditioner raw water pump and compressor aka condenser.
- Circulating water pump and the “weep” hole drip.
- Generator hush muffler aka silencer.
- Sanitary WYE valve
- Auto pilot steering pump.
- Bow thruster fuse location and size.
Quite a few AHA! moments materialized as we moved through the below deck spaces. You can learn so much more about your boat systems if you spend a little time learning. Get comfortable in your engine room and see which equipment you know like the back of your hand and which systems still leave you a bit baffled. You don’t need to become a certified mechanic but it helps to understand each item that makes your boat functional and fun!
